Impressive fuel returns from a ‘seed’ vehicle, coupled with competitive contract hire rates and the promise of first-class back-up from Dealer Euro Commercials, prompted Owens Group to invest in nine new Mercedes-Benz Actros tractor units.
All 2545 StreamSpace models with 330 kW (450 hp) straight-six engines that drive through smooth and efficient Mercedes PowerShift 3 automated transmissions, the trucks are the subject of CharterWay agreements from Mercedes-Benz Financial Services.
Llanelli-based Owens Group has put its latest Actros to work on a newly-won contract. Procurement Manager Barry Evans said: “Within just a few weeks of entering service the Actros were averaging 9.97 mpg, which is a full 1 mpg better than the rival brand vehicles they replaced.
“That’s exactly what we were hoping for, given what we’d already seen from the ‘seed’ vehicle, and in line with the figures Euro Commercials had predicted we could achieve. Given the potential savings, this order makes sound financial sense.”
He continued: “The promise of excellent fuel efficiency was a major factor in our decision to invest in these vehicles, but it wasn’t the only aspect we considered. We were impressed too, with the contract hire deal, which combines attractive rates with a very high level of customer care. The Service department at Euro Commercials’ Swansea branch is open 24 hours a day and offers the professional, flexible back-up we need.
“Our drivers have also reacted very positively to the new Actros too, with the cab design, ride and handling also coming in for particular praise.”
Owens Group has recently undergone a major rebranding exercise and one of its new trucks wears an eye-catching all-over vinyl wrap highlighting the new look. “It’s something of a flagship for our operation and has already drawn a lot of positive comments,” added Mr Evans.
The livery may be new but the operator’s history goes back more than four decades, for most of which time it traded as Owens Road Services. Still family-owned, it has grown out of all recognition from its modest beginnings and now runs a fleet of 250 trucks and 500 trailers, while employing a staff of 500.
In addition to its Llanelli headquarters, Owens has depots in Bridgend, Newport, Port Talbot, Droitwich and Wrexham, from which it offers warehousing and distribution services to a range of clients, many of whom trade within the fast-moving consumer goods sector.
